Paris Hot List: 5 exciting exhibitions opening this week

 
 
 
This week we fly to Paris for five long-awaited exhibitions! We'll have the opportunity to dive into a journey through time starting from the 17th century Dutch art and Vermeer, to the 18th century Venice, to the 19th century emergence of Impressionism to reach the 20th century art of Karel Appel and Jisef Koudelka's photography.
 

Louvre Museum - Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting
February 22 to May 22, 2017
 
This week, the Louvre Museum presents a cycle of three exhibitions dedicated to Vermeer and his contemporaries, to Valentin de Boulogne, a French painter who was deeply influenced by Caravaggio and a selection of masterpieces by 17th-century Dutch painters from the collection of Thomas and Daphne Recanati Kaplan. The most anticipated of the three is, naturally, the Vermeer exhibition which, contrary to the common perception that Vermeer was a recluse, an isolated artist, sheds light to the existence of a network of painters specializing in the depiction of everyday life while admiring, inspiring, and vying with each other. Through comparisons with the works of other artists of the Golden Age—among them Gerrit Dou, Gerard ter Borch, Jan Steen, Pieter de Hooch, Gabriel Metsu, Caspar Netscher, and Frans van Mieris the exhibition shows their similarities of style, subject, composition, and technique.

Pompidou Centre - Josef Koudelka
February 22 to May 22, 2017
 
Josef Koudelka (b. 1938) became world known in the 1970s and 1980s for the Gypsies (1975), an in depth photographic study of the Gypsies of Slovakia and Exiles (1988) series. The latter, a survey on spiritual and physical state of exile, is exhibited in Pompidou Centre in its entirety. 
In the artist's words: “To be in exile is simply to have left ones country and to be unable to return. Every exile is a different, personal experience. Myself, I wanted to see the world and photograph it. That’s forty-five years I’ve been travelling. I’ve never stayed anywhere more than three months. When I found no more to photograph, it was time to go. When I took the decision not to return, I realised that I wanted an experience of the world that I could not have imagined when I lived in Czechoslovakia.”

Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris - Karel Appel: Art as Celebration!
February 24 to August 20, 2017
Dutch artist Karel Appel is known as one of the founding members of the CoBrA group, created in Paris in 1948. CoBrA set out to eclipse contemporary academic forms such as abstract art, as too rigid and rational, proposing instead a spontaneous, experimental art that included practices inspired by Primitivism. They were especially drawn to children's drawings and the art of the mentally disturbed.  
Taking as its starting point a remarkable group of twenty-one paintings and sculptures donated by the Karel Appel Foundation in Amsterdam, the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris is presenting an exhibition covering the artist's entire career, from the CoBrA years to his death in 2006.

Marmottan Monet Museum - Camille Pissarro: The first of the impressionists
February 23 to July 2, 2017
 
This is the first monographic Camille Pissarro exhibition to be organised in Paris for nearly 40 years. Marmottan Monet presents sixty of his most beautiful masterpieces, on loan from leading museums and prestigious private collections to retrace the artist's journey from his youth in the Danish West Indies to his mature years when he created urban series of Paris, Rouen and Le Havre, drawing a little-known portrait of the "first impressionist".

Cognacq-Jay Museum - Serenissime! Venise en fete, de Tiepolo a Guardi
February 25 to June 25, 2017
 
Venice, 18th century: Festivities, celebrations, regattas and other spectacles set the tempo of city life and attracted the curious and the captivated from all over Europe. Much more than simple amusements, these festivities, such as the carnival, were part of a political and religious pageant designed to promote Venice. Immortalized by some of the great names in painting – Tiepolo, Guardi, Longhi – they created a lasting impression and made known the charms of the City of the Doges throughout Europe. Over forty paintings, engravings and drawings from prestigious French and European collections will be presented to the public, bringing to life once again, for the duration of the exhibition, the opulence of the Most Serene Republic of Venice in the Age of Enlightenment.

When visiting the Louvre: Advance reservations for a specific time slot are required for all visitors to the Vermeer and Valentin de Boulogne exhibitions. Make your reservation at the ticket office under the Pyramid on the day of your visit.
